During the last class period we discussed and defined competition. Various definitions of competition were explained. For example: 1) Competition can be defined as an activity in which one gains at the expense of another (Keating, 1964), 2) Competition can be seen as a process through which excellence is sought (Gibson, 1993), or 3) Competition may be seen as a mutual quest for excellence (Simon, 1985). In addition, Coach Brunner explained the connection between competition, winning, excellence, and virtue.

How would you define competition? Provide an example of your experience in sport involving a competitive situation. How does your definition and example relate to winning, excellence, and virtue?
I approach competition with the same mentality i would approach going into war with. Live or die, Win or lose, Them against us or me against you. I refuse to lose, and will do anything in my power to win. Some Nieve people say that winning isnt every thing, however who enters competition to lose. I am a firm believer in the sang, you gotta beat the best to be the best. Therefore i want to play at the highest level against athletes that are as hungry as i am for intense competition. Competition has always made me better and i will see to it that this trend continues, Throught my Highschool football carrer the competition to get on the field at by position was ridiculous. It was a three way battle between the number one running back in the country Demarco Murray, The University Of Arizona runningback Keola Antolin and I. I loved this and it challenged me to be the best that i could be. I believe that i came out of the competition a winner because i never sat out, i started every game of my carrer and was equally as succesfull as the other two. To me virtue is Striving for excellence and never giving up, but doing it in an honest fassion.
ReplyDeleteNow while I agree with Mr. White in the fact that it is like going to war. Us against them but the big difference with mine and his is he is strong believing in that if winning is every thing well although winning is a wonderful thing and four consecutive inturmural championships later i can atest to that but the big thing is learning from what you have accomplished. A lot of people think of competition needs to be you beating the other person in a certain area but what about the learning aspects do they get lost in this translation? I liked winning games and going to championships its a great feeling but the real question is is have i learned from any of these expierences and yes i have i have learned that you must carry yourself with virtue and learn from everything that has happened the wins and losses. You must roll with the punches as they say it in life. Be the person you want people to emulate.
ReplyDeleteCompetition for me it is everything. If you went to compete you should do your best no matter what.If you went to the court to compete you should not have any excuses no matter what. You should play as hard as you can and prove yourself that you are the best.Everytime you go to compete you you should the best as every played before. Once I had very important tennis match. It was Russian championship and If I win I would go to championship of Europe.I was injured my shoulred was hurting real bad.I thought for a while that I have this chance only once and if I am not going to use it than I am not a good tennis player.I told myself if you went to compete you should compete to the last ball and run to every single ball even if it is impossible to reach.I won this match and I showed to myself that I am a good tennis player and that I was the best at that time in Russia at the age of 16.I was so glad that I had that kind of experience because now it helps me in my life.I think how it was hard but I did it and so nothing is impossible for me.For me Virtue is to show my best as I ever done before.Compete with virtue it means play hard and do everything to win but honest and respectfull to the opponent no matter what.
ReplyDeleteCompetition is a way of testing your progress, and your performance in that competition is the gratification you receive for your hard work. It is a way of testing your progress and strides compared to the other players in your league or sport. Every player wants to win their sport's championship, but not every team can play for the 'ship. Competition is a way of deciding who the best two are, and it is the competition between those two that decides who worked the hardest and who is the best.
ReplyDeletecompetition is the essence of our existence---to push the limits on who we are and who we can become must be our purpose---developing and finding self-referential standards for excellence and avoiding the trap of comparing ourselves to others to assess our progress towards excellence is a difficult journey---yet---more than a worthy one to make
ReplyDeleteCompetition to me is someone in your life that is a little better or just as good as you are. someone or a team that you strive to beat. there is hard competition and easy competition. either way you have to be mentally prepared. things that i do when i throw against a competitor is visualize winning and doing good and usually it happens
ReplyDeleteCompetition is something that translates into every part of life. Today’s world revolves around competition and learning how to compete is a valuable lesson to learn. Competition is any time in which you are striving to prove yourself better than another team or individual. I learned how to compete with pride during my years of high school basketball; namely my senior year. My senior year was extremely disappointing as we only won six games and finishing second to last in the league after winning the league the previous year. That season taught me that no matter the outcome you have to put forth as much effort as possible. I believe in the philosophy of John Wooden who said one of his most fulfilling years coaching was a team that only won sixteen games but met their upmost potential through hard work. I believe that hard work is the most important lesson learned from competition. You have to make the most of your god given talent whether it be in athletic competition or the competition of life, and the only way to do that is to strive to reach you're upmost potential in everything you do.
ReplyDeleteCompetition to me is playing your hardest and doing your best. This can mean, however, winning or losing. I believe that if you play your best and apply your best effort, you should feel great about what you have accomplished. My junior year of high school, I was on the JV basketball team. We did not win a game the entire season, but we all had fun and never left the court feeling that we could have done something better. Each of the girls on my team learned valuable skills that we all could use both on and off the court. If I could go back and redo that year, I would keep it just the same. Reaching your full potential in everything that you do will not only help you in your competition in athletics, it will also help you with every day life.
ReplyDeleteCompetition does not have to be involved in sports. Competition is an everyday thing; people compete with themselves on a daily bases. Waking up in the morning for me is a competition, because a part of me tells myself to stay in bed, while the part is telling me to get up and go to workouts. This is probably one of the hardest competitions that I go through in life. Competition in sports to me is going up against a person or a team that has almost the same qualities as you. Such as, their talent, strength, and weakness or they can be better. I love competition; competition brings out the best in all of us. I love to compete, I love to get better, and I love to win. In order for me to get better and win, I have to compete with myself and everybody around me.
ReplyDeleteCompetition is a very amazing thing. When you get to go out and give your all out on whatever field, track, or court that you call yours. True competition is to go out and give every ounce of you and win or lose you must know in your heart whether or not you gave your best effort. However virture in competition is a much different thing, playing with everything in you and still playing with grace and humility is a very hard things to do. I wrestled and played football in high school. I was never the best, but I was blessed with amazing teammates who were national quality wrestlers. Three of my teammates where high school All-Americans. It wasn't until my senior season that I was able to make varsity. In my first match I came back from about 8 points back and beat the kid. I jumped in the air and put a single finger in the air. My head coach pulled me to the side and looked at me in the face and said "You're not number 1 and I don't want to see you do that again." He was a man of few words, at that moment I realized what kinda person I needed to be on and off of the mat.
ReplyDeleteVince Lombardi says it best" "I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious."
Competition and viture do go hand in hand.
Competition for me is well off explain how I live my life. Competition for is very amazing and it express how a persons can be in the long run. Competition pretty much got me here. If I would have stayed back in the island competition would not be very high for me because there would have nothing to compete for. Here in the U.S. you have to be a competitor especially with sport. Do not play sports if you don't like to compete. I like to compete because it pushes my limits to another level and it makes me even a better player. I love going against the best of the best because it pushes a person to know its limits. I think competition will exceed me to the other level of my career in sports because i love to compete and use what God gave me.
ReplyDeleteCompetition to me is doing what ever it takes to out work your apponent to gain success to the best of your abilities. Competition is good because no matter what the competition is about, it always brings the best out of you. Competition to me is life. Live it the best that i can because its some thing god gave to us to have so we should cherish every part of it. All the trials and tribiulations in this world is my apponent. Doing the best that i can everyday to live my life is the biggest competition to me. Live life to the fullest, is what i say cause you only have one.
ReplyDeleteThe act of competing is no doubt one of the most essential processes that enables you to perform to your maximum. If there was no competition in this world then everyone would be satisfied with warming the bench or getting by with barely enough to make ends meet. It is imperative that each individual whether in sport or the workforce strive for competition because it brings out the best in us. Competition whether we like it or not is a routine that is part of our daily basis. Each day we compete for jobs, starting positions, the affection of another, etc. To get where I am today I had to compete. The U of I is given a certain amount of athletic scholarships annually. I had to compete against other athletes around the world in the classroom and on the gridiron to get where I am today. Competition is like playing chess. When your opponent makes a move, how will you respond in order to defeat your opponent. By utilizing this method success can be achieved along with winning. Excellence is developed the more and more you compete against someone of your stature, ability, and talent. When you compete against someone of a lower than you then excellence is not being achieved.

Competition is everywhere and in almost everything we do there is always some type of competition, we compete in life to better than others even in the working environment. To me competition is a form of motivation that drives an individual to be the best that he or she can be to achieve great things. Competition is the essence of sport it is what makes people do everything in their power to be better than any other person. Because I know I don’t like losing and neither do many other people. I find competition in trying to be better than the others in order to earn a starting position on the field. For skiing I would not compete against others head to head, it was always a race against the clock to set the best time to make others bet me. Competition is life!
ReplyDeleteCompetition is a part of our everyday life. Although we can easily see it take place on the playing field. It is an opportunity to measure ourselves aginst both our own individual standards and those that you are competing against. If it was not for competition we would have no drive and desire to push ourselves to reach the next level. I think my biggest competition has been life its self. Everyday there is a new task thrown my way that I have not yet experienced. The beauty of this is that in order to complete these tasks I must draw from past experience where I had to learn and excel to survive. We may not notice it but everyday we are competing for the attention of others to show that we are capable of fulfilling goals that we have individually set or others have set for us.
ReplyDeleteEverybody is competitive in some aspect of their life. Whether it be in school or sports. It is a way to see how we match up against opponents or adversities that might be in our way. In taking a test in school you try and beat your competition by preparing for it through studying, just like you practice and watch film to prepare for an opponent in sports. Competition is just a natural way of life. If one isn't competitive, then they will most certainly not succeed in life. To make it to the top you must beat others to it. Competition is like motivation to prove that you are the best out there.
ReplyDeletecompetition is a way of life. competition is found in everything we humans do. its the main reason for the progression of our race towards the future. we compete in all aspects of life whether it be in our education systems, the world of business, or during our leasure time competition is involved. but why? its because of excellence and winning. people strive to be the best at what they do and when they are successfull they are rewarded with the glory and riches that winning has to offer. virtue comes into affect by the way they come about winning. do they win in a respectfull manner? this is virtueous.
ReplyDeletecompetion is a part of the everyday life. there is no job that u dont have to compete for. doing the best you can to gain success and provide a challenge to your opponents.
ReplyDeleteI compete to the fullest every time. Some people think Im weak or that i dont work hard but I do. Im a different breed when it comes down to competition. My highschool track coach use to call me seabiscuit because of how hard I went at competition. winning is not everything, its a previlege. If everyone could win they would but there can only be one.
ReplyDeletei take competition in everything i do, whether it is fishing with my friends, video games or the sport i play in. to be a compeditor i feel like you want to say by the end of the day that you did everything you possible could in the right way to come out on top of something. i use competition as a challenge to see how i stack up against an individual, a team, and a goal i am reaching.
ReplyDeleteeverything i do i am very comptetitve at. There is competition everywhere, in every sport. feel that for you to say that u did the best u could and challenged yourself every play, you have to be a competitor.
