  1. Hello all---sorry this is late reaching you---have been fighting some health issues while working through the beginning of spring practice here in south carolina---coach wooden's approach to developing the team so they might have the greatest opportunity for success---his pyramid for success has been used by many successful coaches in many sports---review the pyramid---and---select a block from each of the lower three levels and explain how you practically might 'teach' toward the development of that block---looking for practical applications here!---looking forward to being on-line with you all next week

  2. First I will start with the lowest formation of blocks. The first stone that I would choose would be Loyalty the way that I would put this into practice is I can remember one instance were we had practice in a gym that had no hoops or anything but had steps and then a drop off and what our coach would have us do is he would ask us the question do you trust your teammates to catch you and if you said yes then you would fall back and let the team catch you that shows loyalty to have your team mates back when they are in need. The next stone that i would teach is Initiative and what I would try to teach the players that i was coaching is that they have to want it more then the other team. No matter how hard they try they must do whatever it takes within in reason to win. Whether its making sure they all get to class on time or whether its making sure they make all free throws in a game they have to want it for themselves. Third would be conditioning this is big in my coaching style what good is it to have a team if they can't run up and down the court so the way that we would condition would be just like i did it in high school with 17's where you have to run from side to sides of the court in under a minute and three seconds. This would make us moble enough to cut on a dime if we needed to in the game. the way that i would teach this by runnning them with the team every once in a while what better way to become more confident in something than beating your coach in a foot race.

  3. Industriousness- Industriousness is having your players learn how to work hard. John Wooden said that he didn't want his players to work as everyone else did, which included going through the motions and fighting of boredom. John wanted his players to be completely engaged and focused. I think a good way to do this as a coach is to lead by example. If your players can see you that you're working day in and day out to improve the program they will want to follow your lead.
Initiative- Coach Wooden spoke of initiative as the skill of players to have the courage and knowledge to take logical chances and act on them without hesitation. He told his teams to be quick but not hurry. A coach can teach his team to have initiative by teaching them when to take risks and what kind of risks can benefit the team. Once the team is aware of these actions the coach needs to reinforce these kinds of actions when they arise during a game or practice.
Condition- Wooden spoke of condition as not only physical conditioning but also mental and moral conditioning. He spoke of how an individual’s mistakes could bring down the whole team. He said that he often reminded his players that their hard work during practice could ruined in a matter of minutes with a bad choice in between practices. So a consistent reminder to your team to make good choices could help teach your team conditioning of their moral and mental selves.

  4. The three blocks I chose are: Enthusiasm, Intentness, and Team Spirit.

Enthusiasm is simply having your heart in your work. If players do not enjoy practice, they are going to lack the enthusiasm to work hard and improve. I try to keep my practices moving and keep them fun. By doing so my players never get bored, and never dread going to practice because they want to be there.

Intentness, to Wooden, is resisting temptation, and staying on course. There are distractions of all kinds for players at any level. I give my players goals,(or have them make their own), as a way to keep them focused, and intent on improving and reaching their goals. It is important that these goals are reachable, but not too easy to accomplish. Goals that are too easy, or too hard to reach can lower a player's intentness on achieving them.

Team Spirit is extremely important for a team to have success. In order to promote team spirit, I try to keep a task environment. Each player is given a task or responsibility they must accomplish in order for the team to achieve success. As players improve, they are given more tasks. This task environment shows players that their success is directly proportional to the success of the team.

Enthusiasm, Intentness, and Team Spirit are just three of the important qualities in Wooden's pyramid which build a team's mentality for competitive greatness. Each block is equally important. Without one or two of the blocks the team, just like the pyramid, will be incomplete, and struggle to get to the top.

  5. Industriousness... I want my players to have the mindset that they have to work hard if they want to play and want to be successful. Every practice needs to be like a job. Doing your best so we can get the best performance when it matters the most. Success has to be earned through hard work.

Alertness... I want my players to be quick on their feet. They need to be smart in game situations and be able to react the way they need to to be successful. I want them to know their weaknesses and be able to work diligently on them as well as know their opponents weaknesses so that they can be successful against them and take advantage of their weaknesses

Condition... I want my team to be in the best physical shape of everyone that they play against. When it comes down to the last quarter I want my team in the best shape possible to win. I want them physically and mentally strong, never putting their heads down or ever thinking they are out of a game. When they need to put in that last minute effort, I want then to have the energy and desire to do it.

  6. i feel like one of the most important blocks in the pyramid is loyalty. it is one of the founding blocks of the pyrmamid which meansit is one of the factors that supports the entire structure. If a player or team mate does not believe in what the team's overall goal is then they will not give it their all, and thus bring down the team. Loyalty also gives the rest of the team confidence that you will be there for them no matter what which helps ease all the players minds and helps them focus on the team goal.

I think the next most important block is Initiative. I think it's important because you cant complete a goal without having a reason/want to complete it. A person needs to understand exactly what the goal/objective is to accomplish it, thus initiative is important.

Finally, I think conditioning is a key to success. I remember when I played basketball, my coach always used to run us hard at the end of practice until we were dead tired. Then we would shoot free throws and run one play. He always said it was so that no matter how tired we got, we would be able to make free throws and run our go to play at the end of the game. I thought he was just an ass, but at one point there was 45 seconds left in the game against our rival, and we were shooting free throws. we made both of them, stopped them on defense, called a time out and were able to set up one play. We ran our "Run this play till you puke" play. We ended up winning the game. From then on I never doubted our coach, and when any younger player said anything, I was one of the first to tell him to shut up and listen.

  7. I feel that the most important 3 in the box is loyalty, team spirit and enthusiasm

the reason that i would choose all three of these is because loyalty is always important to any team not just sport related but in general at a job
a work team is a team that you have to be loyal to. I also think that commitment thrown in with loyalty is important as well. if you are loyal to a team it shows that you can be trusted and people can count on you.

Enthusiasm is another important thing. coming onto the court of field with a good attitude will carry on to others.

team spirit also shows that you believe in your team and that you are a team player weather you are on the bench or playing in the game cheering on your team boost confidence.

  8. for the bottom level i find that industriouness reflects a pivital aspect of success, in the meaning that success travels in the company of very hard work. hard work always pays off and what you put in you get out. this is one concept that i would stress as a coach.

for the next level i see self control being the most important. in order to have self control you have to be well disciplined. when you look back in the history of sports the best teams or individual athletes have a very high level of discipline. it is a step for success and excellence.

the third level block relates back to the first. conditioning is something i would stress because of its importance. its hard work but if you can go full speed for the whole game then a team is well conditioned and usually will have a high level of success. for something that affects the outcomes of competition in sports so much it is heavily over looked.

  9. loyalty, team spirit and enthusiasm, i feel are the most important.

Coach Wooden spoke of initiative as the skill of players to have the courage and knowledge to take logical chances and act on them without hesitation.

in order to have self control you have to be well disciplined. when you look back in the history of sports the best teams or individual athletes have a very high level of discipline.

Team Spirit is extremely important for a team to have success. In order to show team spirit, I would develope a busy school spirit environment. Each player is given a job/responsibility that they must complete in order for the team to become successful.

  10. Loyalty---This is one of the first blocks that I would lay down with my team. It is important to me that I teach my athletes what it means to be loyal to not only your teammates but to yourself. I would achieve this by using team building exercises that demonstrate team cohesion and loyalty. An example of this would be using the human knot. If one player drops there hand than the team has broken down and is not as strong as they were when everyone was connected.

Initiative---The second block that I would lay down is creating an initiative. It is important that I stress to the team that I am coaching it is not me who is practicing and putting in all the hardwork. But that it is takes them wanting to achieve both as individuals and as a team. They have to have the attitude of wanting to come to practice otherwise they will not accomplish there individual and the team goals.

Team spirit---The last building block is team spirit. You must have the entire team behind you to achieve the teams goals. Therefore everyone on the team must have a role and believe in what they are doing. In order to have a positive atmosphere it is my responsibility to ensure that everyone is well aware of there responsibilities on the team and that they are just as equal as the starters regardless of there postion. Because it takes everyone to be successful.

  11. I say that loyalty should be the first block, because a team that are loyal to each other and has developed that brotherhood is hard to stop. your chemistry will be so precise.
the second block would be my initiative, i will let the team know that I will do all i can as a coach if they will return the favor.
conditioning would be my last block because a well conditioned team is just such a big importance in sport today especially if your not loaded with talent.
